BPA Exposure May Be Linked to Childhood Asthma

Time released an article reporting new findings on the dangers of BPA (Bisphenol A), a chemical used in certain plastics. A recent study has found that women exposed to elevated levels of BPA (Bisphenol A) during pregnancy were more likely to give birth to children who exhibit symptoms of childhood asthma.

This mirrors a study from 2010 where female mice were exposed to elevated levels of BPA during gestation and gave birth to pups with serious breathing problems. Other research suggests that a single exposure to BPA can affect up to 3 generations of lab animals.

While representatives from the plastics industry have repeatedly pointed out that no study has conclusively found a direct association between BPA and the myriad health problems with which it has become associated—problems such as diabetes, obesity, and endochrine disruption—evidence is starting to mount against the chemical. If you’re interested in reading more about the dangers of plastic, be sure to review this Time special report or consider picking up Susan Freinkel’s fascinating book Plastic: A Toxic Love Story.

Currently, only a few states have legislation banning BPA, and most laws on the books in those states cover baby bottles, sippy cups, and other drinkware geared specifically toward children. Furthermore, both Canada and the European Union have officially outlawed the use of BPA in children’s drinkware. Whether the chemical will be outlawed in the United States on a federal level remains to be seen, but the fact remains that the correlation between BPA and an ever-growing list of health problems means people should think twice about buying products containing the chemical.
