By and large, I dislike most reality competition TV shows. I can’t stand programs like the Apprentice, the Bachelor, or the Amazing Race, but for some reason, I love Top Chef. My girlfriend has fervently watched the show since the second season, whereas I started watching it regularly during the sixth season, when Chef Kevin Gillespie of Atlanta’s Woodfire Grill placed third behind the Voltaggio brothers Michael and Bryan. Knowing a handful of people that work at Woodfire Grill (one of whom was my roommate at the time), I had a vested interest in Kevin’s success on the show. That was a couple years ago, and I’m still hooked.

This season has been better than last, as the show’s producers invited back runners-up from past seasons, many of whom make up the most memorable personalities in the show’s history, to compete in what show creators have dubbed Top Chef All-Stars. The main challenge of last night’s episode required that the “chef-testants” race around Target and find all the cooking equipment they would need to prepare their dish, which turned out to be a difficult challenge for many of the chefs.
